The Community Called “Ikebukuro Montparnasse”

Toshima City was once the site of “atelier mura” (atelier villages), also known as “Ikebukuro Montparnasse,” where artists gathered. The Zoshigaya neighborhood was also the home for a large number of novelists and other literary figures back in those days.
The innovative creative spirit of these artistic forerunners, who shared their passion for creation, is still alive and well in the environs of Toshima today. Indeed, the city is the setting for significant artistic and cultural pursuits, and a favored spot for the creative to assemble. Examples of this include art exhibitions covering entire shopping districts, parks and other spaces, Marugoto Museum Hall at the City Office and other endeavors that promote artistic enjoyment at numerous locations.
