The Somei-Yoshino Cherry—An Exquisite Species Originating in Toshima City

The popular Somei-Yoshino cherry is Toshima City’s official tree, but did you know that the species originated here? Gardeners in Somei Village (current-day Komagome district of Toshima City) reportedly combined the Edo Higan and Oshima cherry trees sometime between the end of the Edo Period and the Meiji Period. In the years that followed, Somei-Yoshino cherry trees were planted in all corners of Japan.

Somei-Yoshino cherry trees are part of the Rosaceae family of the order Rosales. This made-in-Japan genus reportedly owes its creation to cross-fertilization between two cherry tree species native to Japan, the Edo Higan and Oshima.
