A town of diversified cultures and arts

Toshima City is becoming a central stage for Japanese subculture, as there are many large retail shops selling anime and cosplay (costumes for role-playing) goods, and cosplay parades are being held in Ikebukuro and so on. Moreover, Toshima is also a theatrical town as many drama events are held and numerous theaters and acting studios are scattered across the town, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.

In addition, each part of Toshima City has its own traditional ceremonies and festivals, temples and shrines and iconic buildings, and locals take part in various activities.

Sightseeing places of each region

Some sightseeing places of each region are introduced.

  • Komagome area: Place of origin of the Someiyoshino cherry blossom, a Sakura flower (Japanese cherry tree) representative of Japan. Sakura goes into full blossom in springtime at the Somei cemetery, where tombstones such as the writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke is located. One can also learn about history at the Someiyoshino Cherry Blossom Archives.
  • Sugamo area: Many temples are located here, such as the Koganji temple famous for Ojizosama (guardian deity for children). Temple festivals are held on dates ending with the number 4 and many people join in the celebration.
  • Otsuka area: Every year in the month of May and October, more than 700 roses planted by the locals can be seen along the Toei Streetcar (Toden) railway tracks between the Otsuka station and Mukaihara station. The Otsuka Awa dance is held in the latter part of August.
  • Higashi-ikebukuro area: One can experience the most trendy sub cultures at the Otome Road filled with many anime and role-playing costume shops, and the Sunshine 60 building.
  • Nishi-ikebukuro area: The Fukuro festival and musical events and so on are held mainly at the Nishiguchi Park. The Rikkyo University and Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan and so on are nearby where buildings of historical origin and grandeur are located.
  • Zoshigaya area: A stroll to visit the Zoshigaya Shichifukujin (seven deities) and so on is recommended, as there are many temples such as the Kishimojin-do (temple). A spectacular ceremony called “Oeshiki”, a lantern procession, can be seen in October.
  • Mejiro area: The Gakushuin University has a very beautiful greenery and Sakura blossoms along the Kanda River in springtime.
  • Shiinamachi to Minami-nagasaki area: A region where many artists gathered in “Ikebukuro Monparunasu” at the beginning of the Showa period, and many manga
  • artist such as the famous Tezuka Osamu lived in the “Tokiwa mansion” during the rapid economic growth period. An artistic town where many monuments stones and art museums can be found.
