Utilities

When you start living in Japan or move to other areas in Japan, you will need to contact appropriate offices for electricity, gas, water, telephone and mail and take necessary procedures to receive services.

You will be charged to make contracts and receive services for electricity, gas, water and cell phones. The bill will be sent to you by mail so you need to pay at banks, post offices, convenient stores, etc. by the due date. You may also pay via account transfer or with a credit card which may help you not to miss the due date.

Electricity

The voltage and frequency in Tokyo are 100 volts AC and 50 Hz. The electrical outlets are 2-pronged. Check if your electric appliances can be safely used. There are procedures you must complete when using electricity for the first time or moving in/out. When the date of your moving in/out is finalized, please contact an electric power company such as Tokyo Electric Power Company and inform them of your moving.

Gas

You will be using city gas in Tokyo. When you want to use the gas for the first time or when you want to move out, contact the following office. You may complete the process on the internet. Please contact them when you find the date of your moving.

If you smell gas

Keep fire away when you smell gas. Follow the instruction below and contact Tokyo Gas immediately.

  • Open windows for ventilation.
  • Turn off all gas appliances. Turn off all gas taps.
  • Close the gas meter valve.

Water

In Japan, you may drink water straight from the tap. When using the water for the first time, moving in /out or when there is a water leakage which needs to be repaired, contact the number below.

When moving, you may complete the necessary process on the internet. Please contact them when you find the date of your moving. Have your customer number on your information sheet (reading meter sheet you receive at the time of meter reading) or on your bills with you when contacting them.

Note:Inquiries relating to emergencies such as for leaks can be made 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Telephones

For using cell phones, make a contract with a cell phone company. When installing a house phone, contact a telephone company such as NTT for installing a phone line. When moving in or out, you will need to contact a cell phone company and telephone company to inform them of the address change.

The area code for 23 cities in Tokyo is “03”.

Mail

When using the mail service, place the stamp appropriate on the item for the size and type of the item to be mailed and place the item in a mailbox or bring it to the post office.

Home-delivery service can be also used to send your item.

When your address to receive mail or items is changed, submit the “Change of Address Notification” to the post office. Your mail and items then will be forwarded to your new address.
