Disaster Preparedness

Japan is a country with many earthquakes. Let’s prepare ourselves for times of emergency on a regular basis. Also, let’s act calmly when an earthquake occurs.

Regular preparation

Let’s make preparation by securing furniture and stocking up emergency food.

Decide on ways to make contact or meet up in case family members become dispersed.

  • Maintain emergency supplies such as water, emergency food, radio and batteries.
  • Secure furniture to prevent toppling. Do not place any items on top of the furniture. Cover the window with sheet to prevent the glass from shattering even if it breaks.
  • Tidy up areas where fire is used.
  • Prepare fire extinguisher and triangular bucket, and learn to use them beforehand.
  • Familiarize with evacuation routes of the building and so on.
  • Discuss with family members to decide on evacuation sites and ways to make contact.
  • Decide on the person responsible for the evacuation and safety of the elderly and children.
  • Participate in fire drills and so on.

Tips regarding emergency supplies kit

  • Prepare emergency supplies, food, and drinking water sufficient for 3 days per person. As a guide, prepare 3 liters of drinking water per day for each person.
  • Decide on the storage place and inform housemate. Make an inspection on a half year basis.
  • Prepare canned food and dried bread that are suitable for storage. Also prepare portable cooking utensils.
  • Prepare a flashlight with long battery hours in an easy-to-access location.
  • Prepare emergency medical supplies to treat mainly external injuries. Also prepare any prescribed medication you are currently taking.
  • Prepare protective hood and helmet for each person to protect against falling objects.
  • Prepare clothes and valuables (bank book, passport, cash and so on) so that they can be taken out immediately.
