Keeping a dog

Dog registration system

If you have a dog that is ninety-one days old or older, you must register the dog. Please register the information of the owner and the dog on the Ministry of the Environment’s microchip registration website. If your dog does not have a Japanese microchip, please visit the Ikebukuro Public Health Center to have a dog tag issued (the issuing fee is 3,000 yen).

Be sure to get a rabies shot!

Your dog should receive a rabies shot at a veterinary clinic between April 1 and June 30 each year. Please bring the rabies vaccination certificate the veterinary clinic gives you to the Ikebukuro Public Health Center, and we will issue you a rabies vaccination completion tag (The fee is 550 yen). Once you receive the tag, attach it to your dog’s collar.

Follow proper dog-walking etiquette

Pick up after your dog and rinse away their urine with water. Always keep your dog on a leash. Train your dog to behave in public, and do not leave them barking unattended.

In times of a disaster

During a disaster, do not leave your dog behind; evacuate together. Confirm the proper actions to take during a disaster in advance. The following website has more information on disaster-preparedness measures for pets:
