Public bathhouses (sento)

Japan public bathhouses are called sento. There are many sento in Toshima City (see below) where you can relax in large tubs and enjoy various types of baths. This kind of communal bathing has deep roots in Japanese culture, and promote interaction within the community. Be sure to try a sento.

Note: Pay attention to business holidays if you’re planning on going to a sento. Always check before going to see if it’s open.

Points to note when using the bath:

×　You cannot bathe while in swimwear or underwear

○　Always wash your body before entering the bath

×　Never bring your towel into the bath

×　Do not dive underwater or swim

×　Food and alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the bathing area

○　Dry yourself completely before entering the dressing room

○　Put your valuables in a locker and keep your locker key with you

×　Smartphones cannot be used in the dressing rooms or bath
